LAKE CONSTANCE - 3 Country Circle Tour

8 day Independent Tour

It would be difficult to find another European cycle route as popular as Lake Constance, with good reason! Three countries share this large lake in the heart of Europe: Austria, Germany and Switzerland, each adding its own special flair.

To mention a few of the art treasures encountered: the cultural heritage Island Rei-chenau, the baroque style pilgrim church of Birnau, or the historic old town of Stein on Rhine. Add the marvellous countryside along the lake, a cycle path winding its way through idyllic meadows, along glittering water, and in front of the stunning peaks of the Alps.

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1:   Arrival at Constance

Enjoy a stroll through the very well maintained old town of Constance, with Town Hall, the Munster, and the maze of little alleyways of Niederburg. Not to forget the Mediterranean harbour with its famous “Imperia”. Overnight in Constance.

Day 2:   Constance – Stein am Rhein. approx. 40 km

Collect rental bikes this morning, then cycle past Wollmatinger Ried to island Reichenau, UNESCO heritage of nature and culture since 2001. Take a boat to peninsula Höri and Gaien-hofen. Today you stay in Stein on Rhine, a medieval town with many fresco-decorated houses.

Before you set off you cross the small bridge to the island of Wird, home of a tiny Franciscan monastery. Along the lake you cycle through small Swiss fishing villages with beautiful half timbered houses. Via Constance you cycle to flower island Mainaut. By boat from Wallhausen into the old Emperor’s residence Überlingen. Overnight in/near Überlingen.

Day 4:   Überlingen – Birnau – Meersburg – Friedrichshafen approx. 40 km

THE RHINE AND NECKAR BY BARGE & BIKE

8 day Escorted tours

The itinerary of this bike & barge tour on Germany’s oldest trade route – River Rhine – reads like an excursion into history: the Dome of Worms, Nibelungen Gate, the historic old town and castle ruin of Heidelberg, the intimidating fortification of Koblenz. Between all these places you cycle through lovely little historic villages with half-timbered houses, small alleys and then again past vineyards and idyllic river meadows. Enjoy a varied and hugely interesting cycle break with warm and welcoming climate.

On alternate weeks this tour is offered in the opposite direction, ie. from Bad Wimpfen to Koblenz.

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arriving in Koblenz

Individual arrival at the ship in Koblenz Harbour. The crew welcomes you on board. Experiencing the Old-town on your own is recommended. Embarkment starts at 4 p.m.

Day 2: Mainz - 35 km

During the morning, the ship will take you up the Rhine in order to reach the world-famous town of Rüdesheim around noon. After a lunch break you will finally get on the bikes. The ferry will take you to the other side of the river to allow you a tour around Bingen. Then, after a short break, you will continue on your bikes into the centre of Mainz on the right side of the Rhine. Look forward to a tour around the town in the late afternoon. There, you might take the chance to visit one of the many interesting museums.

Day 3: Nierstein - 20 km

Heading southwards! From Mainz to Oppenheim. For a while you will stay right by the side of the Rhine, then you will observe the mighty river from a distance. By tractor you discover the vineyards and afterwards a wine tasting and dinner at a local vintners restaurant awaits.

Day 4: Nierstein - Worms  - 40 km

You will rejoin the ship in Worms with its cathedral and Nibelungen gate. Along with the cathedrals of Mainz and Speyer, the cathedral of Worms is one of the greatest creations of Romanic church architecture. Not only tourists come to Worms for a visit, but also the inhabitants of the town love to stroll along the remodeled and restructured Rhine promenade. It is a pleisure to walk from "Strandbar 443" and the "Rheincafe Fürst" past the park to the boathouse "Hagenbräu" and "Kolb`s Biergarten". Marvel at the great variety of exotic plants, almost bringing a Mediterranean flair to the Rhine promenade of Worms.

Day 5: Heidelberg - 55 km

Leaving Worms we cycle via Lampertheim and Hemsbach to Weinheim and continue to Ladenburg and its wonderful half-timbered houses. Here you will say goodbye to the Rhine and get acquainted with the Neckar. Just a short distance along the Neckar to cycle and you will find yourself in the heart of beautiful Heidelberg, where the ship is already waiting for you. In the late afternoon, a walk around Heidelberg is scheduled; we highly recommend a visit to the castle.

Day 6: Eberbach - 35 km

Leaving Heidelberg, your nect destination will be Neckargemünd. On your way you will also pass Ziegelhausen. The route we have chosen leads through the southern Odenwald to Neckarsteinach. You can now look forward to the next stage, the small town Hirschhorn and its castle. This town is considered the treasure of the Neckar valley. The most worthwhile sights are Hirschhorn castle, the ancient Carmelite monastery and the market church. Finally, you will bike to Eberbach, today’s final destination. Enjoy a walk around the narrow streets and the small places supplying a lively atmonsphere.

Day 7: Eberbach – Bad Wimpfen 40 km

After breakfast you will have the energy to bike to Neckarzimmern. A short trip to Hornberg Castle will be very interesting. This castle is one of the most beautiful in the Neckar valley, formerly the home of the bishops of Speyer. Our destination today is Bad Wimpfen – the city where emperor “Friedrich 1 Barbarossa” lived.

Day 8: Bad Wimpfen

After breakfast it will be time to say goodbye. Public transport is available to take you back to Koblenz in about 4 hours, or in about 30 minutes to Stuttgart central station, where you have  access to ICE trains in all directions.

BERLIN AND THE RIVER SPREE BY BIKE & BARGE

8 Day Semi-escorted Tour

This trip begins and ends in Berlin Spandau, easy to reach thanks to public transport. You will pass the nights onboard and rejoice in the slightly hill-covered countryside during the day. The route consists of paved bike trails as well as of idyllic forest tracks which may be covered with sand every now and then. But what would Brandenburg be without its sandy trails? Numerous rivers and channels draw through the Spreewald’s landscape, decorated with charming castles and towns to visit. Not only Berlin and Potsdam are worth a trip.

Discover the Spreewald by bike or enjoy the landscape from the ship, each day you may choose. Both alternatives are tempting!

Day to Day Itinerary

Day 1: Berlin/ Spandau arrival

Individual arrival in Berlin/ Spandau. Embarkation from 4 p.m. on.  Should you still be full of energy, take the chance to bike to Potsdam along the beautiful Wannsee. Should you prefer to spend your first day rather calmly, you are invited to stay on board and enjoy the most magnificent views between Potsdam and the Wannsee from there.

Day 2: Köpenick 12 km

The most attractive sights of Potsdam, ancient residence of Prussian sovereigns, can be discovered either on a guided or an independant bike tour. In the afternoon, the ship brings you to Köpenick with its worthwhile old-town via the Telotow-channel.

Day 3: Königs Wusterhausen 30 - 47 km

Your day starts off with the wonderful Spree-bike trail along the Müggelsee lake. Enjoy the sun, the sparkling blue water and the possibilities to take one or more refreshing swims. You will then continue through the flat, wide and varied landscape in the south of Berlin with its characteristic lakes and forests. Anyone interested in Prussian history should visit the castle of Königs Wusterhausen in the afternoon.

Day 4: Storkow 31 - 39 km

Marvelous lakes and forests characterize todays route from Königs Wusterhausen to the berth of Karlslust in Storkow along the river Dahme. Close to Storkow you will have the chance to stand on Germany's tallest (interior) sand dune at 36m high!

Day 5: Trip around the Scharmützelsee ca. 42 km

This tour around Brandenburgs largest lake will lead you past old country estates on your way from Storkow to Bad Saarow and back. A stop in the thermae of Saarow at the Kurzpark is very tempting: The water temperature stays constantly between 34 and 36 °C. Three merging pools indoors and outdoors create a broad location inviting you to relax.

Day 6: Through the Spreewald 45 km

In the morning, a van takes you to Lübben, situated at the heart of the beautiful Spreewald. Discover the small town with its castle-island connecting the Spree’s forests, nature and culture in the most beautiful way. Walking paths constructed with lots of imagination and adventure areas such as a maze, a sound garden or a water-playground, encourage everyone to experiment. On your bikes you will move on through the northern part of the Spreewald with its numerous channels. Discover even the tiniest corner of the Spreewald and take a tub in order to reach villages that will otherwise remain unaccessable.

Day 7: Berlin Mitte

A small cruise is waiting for you! The Müggelsee and the Spree will be your path to the centre of Berlin. The capital really has a lot to offer. So many amazing views and sights to take pictures of! For those who wish, an additional guided tour by bike through the centre of Berlin can be arranged.

Day 8: Berlin/ Spandau departure

Short trip by ship to Berlin / Spandau and disembarkation.

Windows detail Sanssouci Palace (1745-47) in Potsdam.

ALONG THE BAVARIAN DANUBE

10 day Independent Tour

An easy going cycling route along the Blue Danube, starting in the city of Ulm, whose cathedral tower at 161.5 metres in the highest in the world, and ending in Passau, near the Austrian border.

In Bavarian Swabia, the Danube is quieter, the valley wider and the mountains lower. Significant towns cluster along the river banks like a string of pearls. The Weltenburg Monastery is a destination for both pilgrims and beer lovers. Regensburg radiates historical elegance and was designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO in July 2006.

In Lower Bavaria the Danube meanders between hop-fields to the right and the foothills of the Bavarian Forest to the left. Kehlheim, Straubing and Deggendorf are the destination along the way to the three river city of Passau. Under the baroque buildings of the Residence town the Danube, Inn und Ilz meet and for a few kilometres engage in a colourful display of colours with blue, green and brown merging.

Day 1  Individual Arrival in Ulm

Your trip begins in the dual Swabian-Bavarian town of Ulm. Take the time to stroll around the rebuilt inner city, climb the steps of the highest church tower in the world and visit the picturesque fishing and tanning quarter with its crooked wooden-framed houses. The city library which is built in the form of a glass pyramid is an interesting example of modern architecture in the city.
Overnight stay in Ulm
Day 2   Ulm – Dillingen (ca. 57 km)

Between Ulm and Dillingen you will pass village after village, located a little off the road and safe from the river floods, which are all beautifully well kept. In Elchingen you can visit the pilgrimage church, while Günzburg offers visitors the Church of Our Lady (Liebfrauenkirche) in Rococo style, and in Dillingen the beautiful buildings of this old residence town are worth a look.
Overnight stay in Dillingen
Day 3   Dillingen – Donauwörth (ca. 35 km)

Today you will cycle to Höchstädt with its castle of the Dukes of Pfalz from Pfalz-Neuburg. You will continue on along good quality paths through the Donauauen. Today’s destination is Donauwörth, picturesquely situated on the mouth of the Wörnitz, where once the most important trade route between Nürnberg and Augsburg crossed the Danube. Today the beautiful houses testify to the historical importance of the town. The Käthe-Kruse-Puppenmuseum (Doll Museum) is a treat for both young and old. Overnight stay in Donauwörth
Day 4  Donauwörth – Ingolstadt (ca. 63 km)

On today’s route you'll encounter numerous castles, including the castles of Leipheim, Bertoldsheim and the Stepperg castle in Rennertshofen. The most beautiful renaissance castle on the Danube is located in Neuburg. You will continue on through large forested areas to Ingolstadt. This town is well known as the home-town of Audi but offers attractions for all tastes: art and car fanatics and historians are all catered for. The Museum Mobile presents the history of mobility in a very interesting exhibition.   Overnight stay in Ingolstadt
Day 5   Ingolstadt - Kelheim (ca. 46 km)

You will cycle along the Danube today to Neustadt and further on through fields of hops to Bad Gögging. Like all along the Danube, the Romans settled here and the excavated fort remains are a testament to this. Further on along the route a particularly interesting natural phenomena awaits you: the Danube breakthrough between Weltenburg and Kelheim. Here the Danube forces its way through the rock faces of the Franconian Jura mountains. The famous Benedictine monastery was built on a flat sandbank and a boat will bring you from here to Kelheim. Overnight stay in Kelheim
Day 6   Kelheim – Regensburg (ca. 39 km)

Before you start out cycling today you should go up to the Befreiungshalle, from where you will have a great panoramic view. Today’s route leads you through the spa town of Bad Abbach and onto Regensburg, the most northerly point of the Danube. The town is known as the best preserved city in Germany and was declared a world cultural monument by UNESCO. Round off your day with a walk through the winding lanes of the Spital quarter.
Overnight stay in Regensburg
Day 7   Regensburg – Straubing (ca. 51 km)

You should make you first stop today near Donaustauf and visit Walhalla, an imitation of the Pantheon on the Acropolis, which was built under Ludwig I. in 1842. You will then continue on along the Danube, which meanders along the expansive plains. You will pass Wörth Castle and will find yourself in the midst of the so-called Gäuboden landscape. Your goal is the town of Straubing, which has Celtic and Roman roots and has a impressive town tower.
Overnight stay in Straubing
Day 8   Straubing - Deggendorf (ca. 41 km)

Today you will cycle through Bogen, which became famous due to the pregnant madonna found there in 1104. You will then continue on through Pfelling and Mariaposching to the Benedictine monastery of Metten, before you reach Deggendorf, the gateway to the Bavarian forest. The old town is heavily influenced by Gothic and Baroque styles.
Overnight stay in Deggendorf
Day 9   Deggendorf – Passau (ca. 57 km)

The last stage of your journey leads you past the convent of Niederaltaich, which in the course of its history fell victim to 13 fires! Shortly afterwards you will reach your destination, the three river city and former Episcopal town of Passau. Explore along the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers by boat and round off your holiday with a walk through the old town.
Overnight stay in Passau

Past Isarwinkel, following the turquoise-blue water to the impressive Sylvenstein Lake, and through Lenggries across charming landscapes to Bad Tölz.
