BORMIO                                 Bormio Resort Logo

Resort Statistics Trail Map Lodging

Nestled in the Rhaetian Alps near the Swiss and Austrian borders is the medieval town of Bormio . This storybook little town gives skiers and boarders a chance to enjoy first rate skiing while not suffering through the high prices, high attitude, and pretentious surroundings that often abound in other European resorts.

The problem with many ski towns is that they feel and look like...well, ski towns. Ubiquitous condos and snobby hotels often overrun the areas. Not here. Bormio offers the opportunity to walk through cobblestone streets, explore churches, admire clock towers, and browse through small shops without feeling like a tourist.

Although people use cars, the town is best seen on foot. Take an opportunity to wander the old town, with its 17th-century town center and narrow streets. With few sidewalks, it remains a challenge to avoid the small cars that dart around corners. Strolling through town will provide a glimpse of small town daily life—locals carting around fresh loaves of bread, kids walking home from school, people actually greeting each other as they pass. Tuck the camera away and dress “normally,” and the chance exists to actually blend in.

If the urge to be a tourist strikes, visitors will discover that souvenir shops and hotels do exist in the “new town” or the “mountain side.” Bormio looks and feels like a quaint European town, with zig-zag streets and small cafés. Don't expect this area to feel and look like an Aspen , Mammoth, or St. Moritz . Here, people grab a fresh croissant from a local bakery and walk to the slopes. Bormio is considered one of Italy 's more affordable ski destinations, so it's possible to eat many croissants and buy many inexpensive lift tickets.

Being a small town does have its disadvantages as far as mega discos, fancy clubs, and bustling nightlife. The town does not go completely dark at night. Most locals head to the various pubs and cafés, and there's even a disco for those who want to boogie. The Bormio experience revolves around meeting the people, hanging out with the people, skiing/snowboarding with the people, and enjoying the powder while escaping the big resort ruckus.

SESTRIERE (Milky Way)                                    The Via Lattea

Resort Statistics Trail Map Lodging

Tucked in-between the sunny Susa and Chisone valleys, Sestriere is a friendly town with only a hint of the pretense of a rich Italian ski village left in the air. It is now a mix of young Italians and families coming to enjoy over 400 kilometers (249 miles) of pistes connected to the Milky Way. As host to many of the Alpine events of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , Sestriere will receive a much needed boost into the international limelight.

Unfortunately, the town isn't as charming as its inhabitants, as it didn't escape the massive building blocks of the 60s and 70s. Yet it does host one mark of architectural genius—the circular hotel tower designed by Giovanni Agnelli in 1930 when Sestriere began its history as one of the major ski resorts in Italy .

Sestriere has much to offer both on and off the slopes, the greatest being local culinary delights. One of the best things about skiing Sestriere is that you are in Italy . Your skier's appetite will be well satisfied by Piedmont specialties and all the Italian favorites.

In the entire Milky Way, there are three gondolas, four high speed quads, nine quads, three three-person chairs, 13 two-person chairs, a one-person chair, and 54 drag lifts. A quarter of the chair lifts are detachable, and the total uphill capacity is 100,000 per hour!

Val Gardena (Selva) is situated in the middle the famous South Tyrol . This is an area unlike any other with its spectacular vista's and quaint villages. Although the Dolomites have stood for millions of years, their legendary jagged mountains and peaks are definitely something to see and experience.

The Sella Ronda is an amazing circular network of lifts and trails taking you around the spectacular Gruppo Sella - a mighty limestone massif with villages scattered around it, the biggest of them being Selva (or Selva / Wolkenstien, to give the resort its alternative German form).
