Alpe-d’Huez is one of France’s best all-round resorts, with top-quality skiing for all and fine non-skiing facilities. It has some great tough runs (on and off piste) amid spectacular, high mountain scenery – with glacier skiing from 3300m. Lower down it has extensive intermediate and beginner terrain too. With 250 km and 108 pistes, skiing at Alpe d’Huez is wide and varied and includes Europe’s longest black run, La Sarenne.
The Dauphin of the Oisans Valley a nudge east of Grenoble, Alpe d’Huez is a purpose-built sprawling village set on a wide open flank of mainly south-facing mountainside. An ugly duckling hastily constructed for the 1968 Grenoble Olympics, it may yet turn into a swan as efforts are being made to reclad the amorphous buildings in sympathetic timber, and attractive chalet suburbs are being created on different flanks of the mountain.
There are very few single resorts to rival Alpe-d’Huez for the extent and variety of the skiing. With a modern efficient lift system, high altitude slopes mostly facing the sun, well maintained pistes with extensive snowmaking, good rustic mountain restaurants and accommodation very close to the slopes, put Alpe-d’Huez on your short list.
International flights available to Lyon. There are regular public and private shuttles, which take about 2 hours.
