Our tour leads you through the ‘green heart’ of Italy, beginning in Tuscany, leading through Umbria and finishing in Lazio. This tour explore the country from a bifferent side: calm, mystical and sometimes unexplored. During the approx. 290 km cycle ride you will see cities like Assisi, Perugia, Spoleto or Narni, displaying an incredible wealth of art treasures which take visitors back to the Middle Ages. On quiet roads the tour leads through the valleys of the Apennines and through the softly curved hills of the Trasimeno Lake.
Raging torrents, ravines and the roaming flocks of sheep shape this part of Italy. You smell the sweet odours, rest in taverna’s and fortify yourself for the coming bike stages. At the end, the Eternal City of Rome awaits, a fitting end to a wonderful tour.
At 6.30pm a tour briefing takes place at your hotel with one of our reps. In the meantime, enjoy the wonderful sights of the city.
In the morning we journey out the city to Arezzo by train, where you’ll receive your rental bikes (between 10 and 11am). Visit the splendid churches and palaces in this city of antiquities and gold. By bike on beautiful lanes through the wide plain of Valdichiana, constantly accompanied by the hills and mountain silhouettes of Southern Tuscany. You pass Cortona, up to the Trasimeno Lake, the battlefield where Hannibal fought against the Romans. Wonderful view over the Trasimeno Lake. Overnight stay in Passignano.
You will cycle along the lake to Torricella. From there you will continue through open fields, rolling hills and idyllic places to Perugia. Stroll through one of the nicest shopping streets of Italy to the Cathedral of San Lorenzo, the Palazzo dei Priori, or the Arco Etrusco… the Umbrian capital will fascinate you!
After having crossed the river Tiber, it is only a few kilometres by bike to the birthplace of St. Francis of Assisi. However, before you cycle up to the mystical city, you will take a trip to one of the most beautiful sanctuaries of Umbria: S. M. degli Angeli! In Assisi, you can immerse yourself in the colourful world of medieval frescoes by Giotto.
Your way leads you along the foot of the mighty Mount Subasio to the still entirely preserved medieval town Spello. Afterwards, you will continue through the Valle Umbra to Spoleto. Cities, such as Montefalco, Trevi, and Campello can be seen on the surrounding hills. From the more than 80 m high aqueduct you can enjoy a vertiginous view of the Tessino Canyon, Mount Luco, and the Rocca Albornoz (papal fortress).
Between mountains, accompanied by the beautiful countryside, you will cycle to Terni and further to Narni. Do you want to treat yourself? Terni is known for its excellent pastries and for having the most creative cuisine of the region! Narni and its medieval streets will take you back to ancient times.
The first stage from Narni to Calvi is quite hilly. Enjoy the calmness and seclusion of the small Umbrian town at the foot of the ‘Sabine mountains’, before taking the train into the hectic city of Rome. You’ll return your rental bikes in Poggio Mirteto, before boarding the train to Rome. Dinner and overnight stay near the Central Termini rail station.
Enjoy a morning city tour before ending your tour. Individual return journey or extend your stay.
The terrain is generally flat to rolling, with a few hillier areas around Assisi & Narni. We mostly cycle on cycle paths and quiet side roads, with just a few short stretches on regular streets. There are fascinating stages along the bank of the Trasimeno Lake, along rivers and through the natural countryside of Umbria. A reasonable level of fitness is required for this tour.
The nearest airports are Pisa, Florence and Rome. Regular train (or shuttle bus) service is available from each airport into central Florence.
