The South Tyrol is the perfect area for your next bike tour! Sparkling ice caves, mountains, orchards and vineyards accompany you on your route. You start your tour in the Tirolean imperial city of Innsbruck; next stop is Imst, further along the Inn Valley. From Landeck a bus transfer brings you up the Reschen alpine pass to Nauders. Then you cycle mostly downhill all the way to Bolzano– this way allows less athletic cyclists manage this tour without any problems. Along the River Adige you continue to the sunken village in Lake Reschensee, then onwards to Bolzano. Relax, enjoy a bottle of wine and the views of the Rosengarten: a crowning end to a very attractive tour!
DAY TO DAY ITINERARY
Famous old city with city tower and golden roof. Welcome briefing and handing out of rental bikes.
You cycle on the former Treidelweg (Treidel Path) along the Inn and through the small villages (churches worth seeing, old aristocratic houses, fortress ruins) to Stams (baroque Cistercian convent, convent museum) on through Haiming to Imst.
Along the Inn you pass the monastery of Zams to Landeck. Afterwards a bus transfer to Nauders. Few steps more (100 metres of altitude) up to Reschen pass. Downhill to Lake Reschensee and on side paths on to Mals (town centre has many towers) or Burgeis at the foot of fortress Marienburg.
First to Glurns (fully preserved mediaeval city walls). Via Montani ruins and through Schlanders to Meran. Many fortresses and castles (e.g. Reinhold Messner Castle Juval) are located on the or above the route. Enjoy the views onto impressing Ortler massif and Stilfserjoch while you are cycling. Since 2004 the Vinschgaubahn (train) is activated again, so there is often the possibility to shorten the route.
You have the possibility to do a bike ride to Valley Passeiertal and Sandwirt (birthplace of Andreas Hofer), to walk along famous Trappeinerweg or to go on a shopping tour in Meran.
From or via Lana (Schnatterpeck-Altar) and through numerous vineyards and orchards in the region of the South Tyrol wine Street past many fortresses, castles and ruins as for example Hocheppan (famous frescoes). We recommend spending some time in the beautiful village of St. Pauls at Kalterer Lake. Overnight stay is in the wine village of Auer.
Flat through the Àdige Valley or with a beautiful landscape and an ascent, through the Montiggler Lakes, past the Ruin Sigmundskron, into Bolzano (Ötzi museum).
If you like to extend your bicycle holiday, we recommend the onward trips to Verona or Venice!
RATING: Easy to Moderate
You cycle on hard bike paths in the river valleys of the Inn and Àdige. The uphill section fom Landeck to Reschen Pass is by bus transfer. Between the Reschen Pass and Bolzano there is more than 1200 metres drop in altitude however you still have to cope with a few ascents to keep the route free of traffic.
The nearest airports are Innsbruck and Munich. Regular bus and train service is available from both airports to Innsbruck city centre, where your tour starts.
