This classic tour takes you round the entire lake showing off all of its highlights along the way as well as the historic towns of Constance, Stein am Rhein, Meersburg and Lindau and the festival town of Bregenz. Take the time along the route to discover the beauty of Lake Constance and explore the area, as well as a detour to the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen.
DAY TO DAY ITINERARY
You will begin your trip in Constance, which is the largest town on Lake Constance, and is still quite Medieval in character to this day. In 1414, the town hosted the only church council ever to take place north of the Alps. A small museum is dedicated to the Czech reformer Jan Hus, who was burnt at the stake here. The symbol of the city is the statue of Imperia, which is a memorial to the prostitutes of the council time. The aquariums of the Sea Life Center are also worth a visit, as is the Archaeological Museum. Overnight stay in Constance/Kreuzlingen
First, you cycle along the “Gnadensee” to the former Imperial town of Radolfzell, now a spa resort. From here, you cross the “Bodanrück” range of hills and encounter a very short incline. Arriving at the so-called Überlinger See, part of Lake Constance, you are rewarded for your efforts with beautiful views of the lake. In the evening enjoy a stroll along Überlingen’s pretty promenade.
From Überlingen you cycle through vineyards to Friedrichshafen. On the way you will pass the Baroque pilgrimage church of Birnau. In Meersburg, take a break to wander around the old town and its castle. In Friedrichshafen we can recommend a visit to the Zeppelin museum. You continue on through extensive orchards to today’s destination of Kressbronn.
On your way today, you soon reach Bregenz, the capital of the Vorarlberg region of Austria and famous for its annual festival on the largest lake-stage in the world. You finally reach Höchst where you soon cross the border again and then, after pedaling onwards for a few kilometres, reach Rorschach or Arbon.
Today your tour takes you through Romanshorn which is home to Switzerland’s largest harbour on Lake Constance. Now you continue on along the banks of Lake Constance back to Constance. Wander through the old town or enjoy an ice cream down at the harbour.
Following the side of Lake Constance, you pedal to Stein am Rhein with its frescoed, medieval houses. Switching several times between Germany and Switzerland you reach the canton’s capital, Schaffhausen. The town, whose citizens competed with each other in building gables on their houses, is overlooked by Munot fort.
After breakfast, cycle the short distance to the Rhine Falls, one of Europe’s biggest water falls. Cycling up the Rhine you go back to Stein am Rhein and then follow the Höri semi-peninsula. At Gaienhofen you go aboard the ferry which takes you to the island of Reichenau. From there it’s only a few kilometres back to Constance.
After breakfast your Lake Constance cycling tour comes to an end and you may begin your journey home. We would also be more than happy to extend your stay in Europe.
On the 2nd day you encounter a short incline; on the 7th day the route is slightly hilly but otherwise the route is flat, mostly on separate, paved cycle paths, close to the side of the lake. The path sometimes follows brief sections that are unpaved and around Friedrichshafen the cycle path is alongside the main road. The banks of the lake are widely accessible to the public. Suitable for all level of cyclists and families.
