There are, of course, other resorts with reliably good snow, or with uncrowded easy–intermediate pistes, or with traditional chalet-style architecture, or with little or no traffic, or with teatime raves on the slopes. But we’re hard pressed to think of other resorts that match all of Obergurgl’s attractions.
People go back to Obergurgl time after time, booking the same hotel a year in advance to avoid disappointment, and it’s not difficult to see why. In Obergurgl, lift lines are virtually unknown and the runs never crowded. Top snow conditions are guaranteed from mid-November to the beginning of May when superb corn snow and plenty of sunshine ensure a first-class skiing experience.
Situated in the spectacular Ötz Valley, Obergurgl is Austria’s highest district, resulting in an excellent snow record and a very long skiing season. The village remains largely unspoilt – there is no through traffic and the attractive centre has plenty to offer in the way of traditional nightlife. The skiing and lifts start directly from the village, with skiing back at the end of the day to virtually all the hotels we feature. The village has a welcoming, traditional Austrian feel and quality accommodation on offer. As well as the slopes running straight down to the resorts, there are cross country ski trails and toboggan tracks that run to the village, ensuring that visitors are always active.
Munich is the best option, from where it is a 4 hour drive to the resort. Regular bus transfers or rental cars are available.
