The most famous bike route in Europe along the beautiful Danube, this time we enjoy our travelling hotel, the 4 star MS Carissima, as we start in Passau, Germany, cruise and cycle through the Austrian countryside into Slovakia and Hungary, before returning to Germany. This journey takes you to the highlights along Europe´s second largest river.
The impressive spectacle of nature of the Schlögener Donauschlinge (Great Loop”), the fascinating landscape of the Wachau with its vineyards, castles and palaces, the untouched alluvial forests of the Danube National Park as well as the picturesque Hungarian Danube Bend, alternating with metropolises such as Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest.
Explore Budapest’s imperial and Art Nouveau delights, take a comprehensive tour of beautiful Bratislava’s baroque and Gothic buildings and fountains and discover why Vienna is “the waltz capital”. After a great day of cycling, relax on board listening live music or discover the port city.

DAY TO DAY ITINERARY
Day 1: Passau
Where the rivers Inn, Ilz and Danube unite, the bishop’s town Passau is located at the Bavarian/Austrian border. Embarkation 05:00 p.m. The MV Theodor Körner is waiting for you in the harbour of Passau and the crew bids you welcome onboard. Dinner onboard.
Boarding from 4.30pm and departure: approx. 6:00 p.m. Cruise to the Austrian resort town Engelhartszell, which is the former summer residence of the bishops of Passau
Day 2: Donauschlinge “Great Loop“ (40 km)
Your first day’s tour begins with a ride through the classic scenery of the ‘Great Loop’ Donauschlinge – one of the most beautiful sections of the Danube. Along the way you will encounter tiny villages and cozy cider taverns. In Austria’s only Trappist monastery at Engelhartszell you can taste their delicious liquors and cheese. The famous ‘Schlogener View’ provides a wonderful panorama of the surrounding Austrian countryside. The boat welcomes all cyclists back on board in the charming market town of Aschach..
Day 3: Devin – Bratislava (18 to 43km)
You pedal along the former “Iron Curtain”, cross the green line and reach the imposing Imperial Palace of Hof with its beautifully terraced gardens and idyllic manor farm.
Follow the bike path through Austria’s “vegetable garden” to the coronation city of Bratislava at the slopes of the Little Carpathians and discover the hidden alleyways and sights of Bratislava on an optional city tour.
Day 4: Budapest – Szentendre (54km)
The entrance to Budapest, Hungary’s capital, is stunning. Savour the beauty of Buda and Pest, which lie on opposite sides of the Danube, with a coach tour or a guided bike tour (optional) that reveals all the highlights of this handsome city. You can also choose to cycle on a round trip to the charming town of Szentendre with its Mediterranean atmosphere and lively art scene. In a very close experience of Hungarian culture you may attend an evening show with traditional music and dances (optional).
Day 5: Danube bend – Esztergom (43 km)
Situated in the middle of the Danube River the idyllic isle of Szentendre exudes silent Puszta romance. History, folklore and hungarian way of life will accompany you on your way to Esztergom where the gorgeous basilica – Hungary’s largest Catholic Church is impressing its guests.
Day 6: Vienna (day of rest). City tours by bike or bus, Waltz Concert (optional)
You can discover this city of vitality during a sight-seeing tour by bike or bus. The most famous places of interest are the Prater Amusement Park, St. Stephens Cathedral and the Royal Hofburg. The gorgeous boulevard “Ringstraße” with its Burgtheater, State Opera House and Town Hall reminds one of Vienna’s imperial past.
There is enough time in the afternoon to stroll or visit one of the famous Viennese coffee bars. The evening ends impressively with a Waltz and Opera Concert at the Wiener Kursalon (optional) or at a local wine tavern.
Day 7: Wachau – Rossatz – Melk (37 km)
Surrounded by small quaint towns, apricot orchards, vineyards, castles, monasteries and ruins, this hilly landscape is enchanting for everybody. This is pure biking enjoyment! In Spitz you may find comfy wine taverns directly besides the bike path. Take a break – you owe it to yourself!
You have to walk your bike through Dürnstein´s narrow alleys. King Richard Lionheart was not a voluntary guest here during mediaeval times. At the end of this stage there is Melk with its gorgeous baroque monastery of the Benedictine monkhood. After a ceremonial gala dinner lots of fun and entertainment can be experienced on board during a crew-led folk show.
Day 8: Passau (departure)
Every journey draws to an end. Once again you enjoy the sunrise on deck and the peaceful silence of the Danube Valley as you wind your way back to Passau. Take a last sight of the Schlögener Schlinge before you arrive relaxed in Passau at approx. 10am. Disembarkation from 10:30 a.m. onwards.
Flat paved cycle paths along both sides of the Danube, suitable for beginners, children, and experienced cyclists alike.
The first thing you´ll experience when boarding is the friendly atmosphere and the coziness of this river ship. In the restaurant you will start your culinary excursion through the Danube countries – the fantastic view of the beautiful scenery will sweeten the diversity of flavours you are tasting. In the Panorama-Lounge, where the bar is located, you can enjoy a glass of wine with your new friends and travel mates while the gorgeous landscape is passing by. Comfortable lounge chairs and discreet colors make you stay a little longer… After an exciting day of cycling you can relax in the spa with sauna and whirlpool. For pleasant refreshment, jump into the pool (June-August) on the sun deck, from where you can enjoy a magnificent view. And if you are in the mood for reading, just borrow a book in the library! The comfortable ship will make your journey unforgettable. Wifi is available on board (payable on spot, connection can vary).
All 75 deluxe staterooms are 14.5 m² and feature a hotel-style double bed, which may be converted to two single beds. The half-height windows on the Main deck cannot be opened, while the staterooms on the Upper and Middle deck provide full-size picture windows which do open. All cabins are equipped with a private bathroom with a shower, hair dryer, TV, safe and full air-conditioning. For those who love the luxury: Some cabins on the promenade deck have a connecting door and can be rearranged as a spacious DELUXE-suite with living room and bedroom (prices on request). ECO cabins are located in the front/rear part of the ship (engine noise possible).

Your tour guide provides daily route notes, maps, advice etc each morning however the the daily bike tours are unescorted.

Please notice that storage space in cabins is very limited.
Please be aware that your ship, like all other ships on the Danube, is not only your hotel but also a machine, working with engine power often during night. Especially when crossing locks and bridges, the preparation work may cause noise.
Schedule: In case of flood or low tide the shipping company reserves the right to bridge parts of passages with buses. In extreme cases the shipping company reserves the right to cancel the journey on short notice. No legal right shall be constituted of both situations (Water level is force majeure). The same applies for officially ordered (previously not announced) repair work on locks or bridges or in case of undeserved breakdown of engine and power unit. We reserve the right to change the Schedule when low/high water bars the ship from passing through a certain area. Some parts can be negotiated by bus (free of charge)
