Taos is located in the north-central region of New Mexico, and is close to Taos Pueblo, the Native American village and tribe from which it takes its name.The Taos Pueblo was added as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 as one of the most significant historical cultural landmarks in the world. The name is also referred to by the nearby ski resort of Taos Ski Valley.
The Taos area has four ski areas – Taos Ski Valley, Red River ski area, Sipapu (ski area) and Angel Fire ski area. Taos Ski Valley is a village and the largest alpine ski resort in New Mexico. Until March 19, 2008, it was one of four ski resorts in America to prohibit snowboarding, but now snowboarding is permitted.
The ski area, Taos Ski Valley, Inc., was founded by Rhoda and Ernie Blake, and is still managed by the Blake family. It has a one to one ratio of expert to beginner/intermediate terrain, and has the highest rated ski school in North America. The village sits at an elevation of 9,207 feet however the Village limits reach elevations of 12,581 feet with the highest residential dwelling being at 10,350 feet. Wheeler Peak, the tallest mountain in New Mexico at 13,161 feet, overlooks the village.
Taos Regional Airport (SKX) is under the direct supervision of the Town of Taos. The airport is located just a few miles north of the Town of Taos on U.S. Route 64 towards the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. Other airports in New Mexico include the Santa Fe Municipal Airport and Albuquerque International Sunport.
The nearest major airport is at Santa Fe, approx. 90 minutes by rental car from the ski resort. Another option i Albuquerque, a 3 hour drive away.
